Finding Refuge
Barn cat politics are complicated. They are full of alliances, double-crossing, and violent overthrows. My personal introduction to all this began last summer when a young beauty named Roxy arrived without fanfare in our barn. She proceeded to charm our crusty old tom, Yellow Cat, raise a litter of kittens, then slip away as unobtrusively as she had come. The litter consisted of 4 boys and 2 girls. One of the boys and one of the girls were transported via my Subaru to become

Walking in the Evening, All Together
I've been trying to walk every evening. As I get bigger, and slower, it gets harder, but some evenings are so beautiful it would be difficult NOT to walk out into the cooling dusk. It didn’t help that my heart was and is really hurting. You see, I also just lost Betty, one of the little calves I was raising. She had grown big and was thriving, and then suddenly she was dead. Just like that. I am also losing my sweet cat, Charles Dickens. He went missing, then came back, but he is

First Walk
After reading the article "A Daily Walking Practice" by Shari Altman in the amazing magazine Taproot I decided to find a route to walk if not daily, at least often. Altman says "I know of no better way of connecting with the seasons than by walking the same path on a regular basis."...So today the dogs and I went out into the cool, gray morning, heading north along the dirt road that borders my little pasture in search of our own path. Before I tell the tale of the walk, how
